In our math class, we use a classroom economy, which models real-world financial responsibilities. This year-long simulation rewards positive behavior and a strong work ethic as the students learn to earn, save, and spend class money. They work their job to earn a salary and although a portion of the money will be used to pay monthly bills, some students must pay fines if they violate the classroom rules. Students also have the option to apply for bonus money opportunities to earn even more money.
We manage our money online using Riedl Bank, which is powered by ClassBank. This platform allows students to log in using their private username and password, view their account balance, calculate transactions of paychecks/expenses, and purchase from the store (by adding items to their cart) just as if they were really buying products online. It is a valuable experience to learn how to use real-world math in a safe learning environment!
Once a week, I open the Classroom Store, where students can buy a maximum of 3 items with their class money. I donate these items with my own hard-earned money so my students can have valuable things to spend their hard-earned money on.
At the end of each quarter in my class, I hold an Auction Day, where students can bid their class money on valuable items they want. Generous people from our neighborhood, city, and even across the country have given money through DonorsChoose (learn more about DonorsChoose).
During the week of Auction Day, I host an Online Auction, where students can go to my website and email me bids on special items donated from staff members, families, neighbors, and even other students. Donations are usually used items looking for a new home, but sometimes they are hot-ticket brand new items.
Three ways to give to the students in our class...
(scroll down for details)
Option 1) Give money to DonorsChoose
Option 2) Donate new/used items to the class
Option 3) Send money to Mr. Riedl (for our store)
I have a vision of people loving on my students from afar. I would love to see donations coming in for my students for years to come. I would love to rely on a community of people to support a project at a school like H.B. Lee Middle School, so I can continue to tell my students over and over again, "Guess what, everyone!!! Random people in our community love you all and want you to have fun learning math, making goals, earning money, and buying prizes, so they donated their own money to our class! Isn't that awesome?!" This dream I have for my students just seems so warm and joyful in my mind... that these kids would feel the love of people they don't even know, willing to donate to some random 6th graders in a middle school they've likely never visited before. Thanks for reading and considering a donation to my kids at H.B. Lee.
❤️ Sincerely, Mr. Riedl
DonorsChoose is the best way to donate to the students in my class. If you don't know about the great things this organization is doing for public education, please click here or watch the video below. Each quarter I post a new project on DonorsChoose on my teacher page. Here are the upcoming projects you can donate money to:
